LA MINIATURA: AN EXPERIMENT IN MODULAR DESIGN

Today marks the 54th anniversary of the passing of legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and what better way to celebrate his career than to own one of his iconic creations. One of Wright’s best known works, the Millard House, also affectionately known as La Miniatura, has just been listed for sale . . .

Built in 1923, La Miniatura was the first in a series of four textile block Usonian houses designed during the 1920s, a concept which was the result of Wright’s desire to broaden his architectural vision and break away from the typecast Prairie House he was renowned for creating. At the heart of Wright’s design philosophy was organic architecture, a term he coined to describe the promotion of harmony between humanity and the environment through homogenic design principles.

Aside from its innovation and holistic ingenuity, Wright’s unique textile block building system was an experiment in modular design using textured precast concrete blocks. In the case of the Millard House, they were made from sand, gravel and minerals found on the property, melding natural materials with the landscape in his trademark fashion. One thing’s for sure, anyone who is lucky enough to acquire the Millard House will be owning a rare and sustainable piece of architectural history.
