Meet the M+M Team: Phil, Architect

Meet Phil Renteria — newly registered as an architect and already bringing his passion for modular architecture into practice.
At Modscape + Modbotics, he’s been honing his craft, learning the ins and outs of modular construction, and enjoying the journey (with a few pool table breaks along the way).
Now that you’ve recently become a registered architect, what does this milestone mean to you?
It’s been an enjoyable journey. The registration process itself involves compiling your professional experience, completing exams, logbooks, written statements, and interviews over a six-month period. There’s a lot of waiting involved which is probably the hardest part. It’s nice to see how the past few years have culminated.
What do you enjoy most about being part of the Modscape + Modbotics team?
I’m fascinated by the nature of the work – it’s unique to be involved in architecture so closely tied to construction. The process has introduced me to new sides of building. The team is great, and I appreciate the social moments, especially around the pool table on lunch breaks. There’s a lot happening in one place, and it’s nice to see it all come together.
What drew you to modular construction?
I studied at Deakin University, which has a strong focus on modular and prefabricated construction. I had the opportunity to take several unique units and design studios that were entirely centred around prefab, which really sparked interest. I was curious to explore how these ideas translate into the real world.
What’s something you’ve learnt at Modscape + Modbotics that surprised you?
I’ve gained a deeper understanding of modular construction methods and project sequencing. It’s been interesting to learn the finer details of how a project evolves, from early design stages, working within the prefabricated design framework, through to construction, transport, and final installation.
How do you unwind after a long day?
I like to relax, hang out, enjoy good food, and play sports.
