Elevating Space with a Pop-Up Roof for Early Learning

Across recent kindergarten projects in Thornbury and Broadmeadows, we’ve explored how modular architecture can deliver more than efficiency — it can elevate everyday experiences for young learners.

One feature that stands out in both builds is the inclusion of a pop-up roof, adding volume, light and a quiet sense of wonder to the learning environment.

The pop-up roof is more than an architectural gesture. By lifting a portion of the ceiling upward, the design introduces a dramatic sense of vertical space — creating interiors that feel open, airy and uplifting. Clerestory glazing wraps around the raised form, drawing in soft natural light throughout the day while reducing dependence on artificial lighting.

Its impact, however, is as functional as it is visual. The increased ceiling height promotes better air circulation and passive ventilation — critical for comfort and wellbeing in high-activity learning spaces. It also allows for integrated acoustic linings, helping moderate sound levels and support focus and calm during group activities.

Inside, the pop-up anchors the central learning area without compromising layout flexibility. Outside, it adds a distinctive architectural identity — playful yet considered, making the building instantly recognisable within the school landscape.

At Modscape, we’re drawn to design modular education that serve multiple purposes — especially those that help foster curiosity and joy.
