Modular Skin – Museo Soumaya
Beautiful, innovative and enchanting – no two perspectives are the same when admiring the form of Mexico’s Museo Soumaya.
Designed by FR-EE, the building is home to a private art collection of nearly 70,000 works from the 15th to the mid-20th century.
Our Director, Jan Gyrn visited the museum in Mexico City over the Christmas break and was amazed at the structural engineering of the building. The rotated rhomboid form is supported by 28 curved steel columns of varying sizes and shapes.
The building’s skin is a honeycomb of mirrored-aluminium modules. There are close to 16,000 of modules cloaking the structure, rendering its appearance to be dependent on the weather, time of day and the viewer’s vantage point.
Billowing into the Mexico City skyline, Museo Soumaya is a glimmering civic gift that has captivated tourists, locals and now the Modscape team alike.
