Nsw Police Force’s Regional Small Police Station Program
Modscape is a partner in the NSW Police Force’s Regional Small Police Station program, and is responsible for the construction and delivery of seven new modular stations across the state.
NSW Police engaged Group GSA Architects to develop a template police station design that would be utilised throughout regional NSW. Modscape participated in this early design phase with Group GSA to provide modular design advice.
The rollout’s first four stations – which serve communities in Adelong, Bonalbo, Collarenebri and Tathra – follow similar design templates and aesthetics in order to create a uniform architectural branding for the state’s police force. Silvertop ash timber panelling and battens clad the facade of the stations, combining with an understated recessed entry point for a sophisticated and minimal appearance.
Each station meets whole of life objectives as well as strict security requirements, from anti-jump screens and specially integrated, fixed furniture down to custom joinery. The design of the buildings incorporates lockable, operable screens for both privacy and security, allowing them to be completely and seamlessly locked down when unoccupied.
Each of the four stations can accommodate up to three officers and includes a reception, interview room, office, charge facilities and amenities.
Meanwhile, solar panels cover the buildings’ entire roofs, taking the majority of the facility’s electricity use off-grid.
While major design considerations remained uniform across all stations, each site also considers its heritage, history and culture. Collarenebri in particular holds significant history – the area home to the Gamilaroi Nation of Indigenous Australians, and was later a hotspot for travellers. To honour the town’s previous police station, Modscape reused the original cell doors in the new facility. The original fireplace was carefully retained and sits exactly where it was in the original station, right beside the new building, surrounded by a small garden and marked by a plaque outlining the site’s history.
Via its one-stop-shop approach, Modscape provided a turn-key solution to the NSW Police, managing all landscape works, signage, fencing and site works in addition to the design and construction of the stations themselves, resulting in a streamlined and effortless project.
By taking advantage of our approach to design for manufacture and assembly (DfMA) and prefabrication methods, the first four stations were manufactured in only 10 weeks, providing New South Wales’ regional police force with high-quality facilities in record time.
