Northern Hospital
The Victorian Government urgently responded to recommendations from the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System with a $492 million investment to deliver 144 new acute public mental health beds. The new beds, including 120 hospital-based beds and 24 home-based beds, will be delivered across four Victorian health services to address increased demand on our system following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Modscape was appointed as modular contractor to deliver the new acute mental health facilities at Northern Hospital in Epping. This project was delivered in collaboration with Lendlease, NTC Architects, NH Architecture, Northern Health, Mental Health Reform and the Royal Melbourne Hospital’s North Western Mental Health. The home-based beds will be delivered by Orygen Youth Health.
The project resulted in an increase in capacity, reduced pressure on emergency departments, and provided additional support for people experiencing mental illness who require immediate treatment in a contemporary, safe and high-quality setting.
Fully complete, the new hospital-based beds provide more than 43,000 days of care, enabling 2,500 more Victorians to access vital mental health services every year.
