Things We Love: Sungai Design

Some designs invite you to pause—to see waste not as an end, but a beginning. Sungai Design does just that, turning Bali’s river plastic waste into timeless furniture that balances sustainability with sculptural simplicity.

Every piece begins not in a factory, but in a river. Working with collected plastic from Bali’s rivers, Sungai diverts waste from local waterways and transforms it into beautiful, enduring furniture and objects. The material is cleaned, sorted, and processed into smooth, stone-like surfaces—a modern composite that rivals marble or terrazzo in strength and finish, yet carries a far lighter footprint.

This process is more than recycling; it’s a form of regeneration. Each table, bench, or vessel tells a story of renewal—of how waste can become something functional, tactile, and timeless. Paired with refined silhouettes and warm natural tones, Sungai’s designs feel both sculptural and grounded, proving sustainability and sophistication can coexist effortlessly.
