Modular Innovation at Tarragona’s Passenger Terminal
Where the land meets the sea, Tarragona’s new Public Passenger Terminal by Hombre de Piedra Arquitectos sets a new benchmark for modular infrastructure.
Prefabricated with precision and assembled at speed, it’s a project that proves industrialised construction can do more than deliver efficiencies — it can create places of true architectural integrity. This 2,851-square-metre facility exemplifies how industrialised construction can meet the evolving demands of contemporary transport hubs. Fabricated in Almería and assembled on-site in under ten months, the terminal’s modular design mitigates the unpredictability of traditional construction methods. This approach ensures consistent quality and expedites project timelines, addressing challenges such as skilled labour shortages and complex logistics.
The architecture is designed to adapt smoothly to changing passenger volumes, reflecting a strong commitment to future-proofing. With seamless scalability built in, the terminal remains responsive to the dynamic nature of maritime travel.

What particularly resonates with us is how its modular design goes beyond construction method — it represents a design philosophy. The building’s simple, flexible forms are engineered to accommodate demand shifts with minimal disruption, a mindset we embed deeply into our own modular homes and commercial projects. Scalability and adaptability are at the core of the structure, enabling the terminal to evolve alongside Tarragona’s growing cruise industry without the waste or inefficiency of traditional expansion methods.
Sustainability is another quiet achievement of the project. By embracing modular prefabrication, the terminal reduces embodied carbon, construction waste, and on-site energy use — values that sit at the core of Modscape’s own sustainability strategy. It’s a reminder that great public architecture doesn’t need to shout its credentials; it just needs to work harder, smarter, and more responsibly.

The Tarragona Passenger Terminal stands as a brilliant example of how modular architecture can be both resilient and refined. It proves that industrialised buildings aren’t limited to pragmatic solutions; they can be bold, flexible, and deeply human-centred. It’s the kind of future-facing design thinking we admire — and the kind we are proud to advance every day.
