Situated at the base of the slopes between Hotham and Falls Creek, this bespoke home in Bright, Victoria is designed to evolve from a family getaway into a permanent residence. The clients came to us with a clear design intent in mind – to create a rural retreat that is oriented to frame direct views towards the township of Bright, with Mount Bogong providing a dramatic backdrop in the distance.
The layout responds to the site’s natural contours, with the width of the home determined by a steep fall-off at the rear. Main living spaces are positioned east and west to capture changing light and expansive outlooks, while bedrooms and the sunroom face north for warmth through the cooler months.
The design takes a mixed-material approach combining steel framing and timber cassettes. A steel frame structure enables the slender flat roof form, while the expressed vertical structural elements create rhythm and depth across the home. Timber cassettes are used for the walls and floors, pairing considered detailing with the warmth of natural timber to create a refined yet grounded aesthetic.
Natural stone walls anchor the living spaces and extend through to the front deck, dissolving the boundary between inside and out – a seamless transition that speaks to what modular design can achieve.
Blackbutt timber introduces warmth and texture throughout. Colorbond cladding in Matt Monument sits in contrast to the stone and timber, grounding the palette in the surrounding landscape. The entry is discreet – framed in timber, understated by design.
Inside, the floorplan centres on an open-plan living, dining and kitchen space. A fireplace anchors the main living area, and an expansive deck extends the shared spaces into the landscape. North-facing bedrooms and a sunroom draw in light through the colder months.
A home built for the long stay – where the valley, the light and the mountains become part of daily life.
