Snabba Hus and the Future of Affordable Living

Blending modular construction with Scandinavian design, Snabba Hus Västberga by Andreas Martin-Löf Arkitekter sets a new standard for affordable housing.

Developed for Svenska Bostäder as part of the Snabba Hus (“Fast Housing”) initiative, the project demonstrates how prefabricated design can deliver high-quality, sustainable homes that remain accessible to the younger generation.

Using offsite prefabrication and a palette of cost-efficient, standardised materials, the development provides 280 compact apartments for young people awaiting long-term rental housing. Six interconnected buildings are arranged around a landscaped central courtyard, creating a sense of openness and community while maximising limited urban space.

Generous balconies, shared ground-floor facilities, and transparent glass entrances strengthen the relationship between residents and their neighbourhood. The façades feature a rhythmic pattern of translucent polycarbonate panels and vertical aluminium louvres—a distinctive design that reflects the project’s modular construction while capturing the light and texture of its industrial surroundings.

At Modscape + Modbotics, projects like Västberga resonate with our approach to modular design as a means of shaping better communities where affordability, sustainability, and great design go hand in hand.
