Things We Love: Swings and Bells
We’re always drawn to projects that challenge the way people interact with space.
Envolée, part of Céleste Boursier-Mougenot’s points de suspension exhibition at Frac Normandie in Caen, France, transforms a historic courtyard into an immersive experience of movement, sound and connection.
At its centre is a circular arrangement of eight timber swings, each suspended beneath an antique church bell. As people swing, the bells begin to ring, creating an ever-changing composition that can never be repeated. Every movement contributes to the soundscape, turning individual moments into a shared experience.
What we love most is the way the project reimagines something deeply familiar. A swing is one of the simplest pieces of play equipment, yet here it becomes a tool for bringing strangers together. The architecture provides the framework, but it is people who complete the work.
The installation also reminds us that successful spaces aren’t always defined by what they contain, but by what they encourage. Rather than prescribing a single way to engage, Envolée encourages visitors to slow down and explore the installation through movement and play.
