How Material Selection Shapes a Bespoke Home

Material selection is one of the most defining stages of the bespoke journey. It’s not just about choosing colours or finishes—it’s about shaping the atmosphere, character, and longevity of your home. Every surface, texture, and detail contributes to how a space feels, how it performs, and how it endures over time.

For our Foster North home, our Architect Angus brought this philosophy to life. The clients came to us with deep appreciation for Japanese craftsmanship and a desire for a simpler way of living. Charred timber cladding, Japanese shoji screens, and finely crafted joinery create moments of calm while framing views of the surrounding landscape. Here, materials don’t just finish the building — they express a design principle of restraint, balance, and timeless beauty.

In this video, Angus shares his thoughts on the project and the language of materials.

How we collaborate on material selection

Our team will work with you to curate a palette that feels right for you. Together, we’ll refine selections or explore custom touches, whether subtle or bold, to make the home truly yours. We collaborate with local makers and trusted suppliers across Australia and New Zealand to source materials of enduring quality and character.

Selecting durable and sustainable materials

Every material is chosen with durability and sustainability in mind. The result is a home that doesn’t just look considered on day one, but continues to feel authentic, enduring, and grounded in its setting for decades to come.

Materials that are built to endure

Material selection is integrated into the design journey from the very beginning, ensuring every choice contributes to the home’s performance, character, and longevity. By working collaboratively and sourcing responsibly, we create homes that don’t just meet expectations — they endure, grow richer with age, and feel uniquely yours.
