Things We Love: Modular Building Kit For Urban Gardeners
As you probably know by now, we’re a bit obsessed with anything modular. So it’s not surprising that we were instantly drawn to the GrowMore concept.
Like our prefabricated homes, the GrowMore building kit uses modular construction methods to create an array of different configuration possibilities for budding urban gardeners. But being modular is not the only reason we’re drawn to it – the resulting structures gives people the opportunity to produce their food locally and create places for social exchange.
GrowMore is a flexible modular system realised by Danish architects Sine Lindholm and Mads-Ulrik Husum, which allows anyone to construct their own urban garden, suitable for a space of any size or shape.
Planting boxes are arranged and bolted together to create mini gardens. The structures can be configured to create circular nests or zig-zagging screens, can be used indoors or outdoors and can be tailored to suit a multitude of different urban environments.
The system consists of just six parts, which include a standard-sized planting box, shelves and fixings.
“It’s like a Lego system,” says Lindholm. “The parts can be rotated vertically and horizontally, so it’s totally flexible. You can really freestyle, and build anything you want.”
Here the architects have presented a modular construction principle so that anyone with a CNC machine can reproduce the plywood components, thus using them to create the plant-covered structure that best suits their needs.
Central to the design is a circular “pivotal joint” that uses M8 bolts to secure elements at different orientations and allowing the same pieces to be used to create many different designs. Because people can cut their own pieces as and when needed, the structures can be added to and can grow along with the gardens – modular simplicity, intelligence and beauty all in one.
